Collection: Diane Gray Felting

Artist Diane Gray of Diane Gray Artistry is a fellow English Setter fancier and I couldn’t help but be stopped in my tracks every time she posted one of her magnificent creations on Facebook.  Often, I thought I was looking at real animals, only to be fooled by her exquisite ability to capture the essence of each animals she creates, whether it be a llama, a show dog, a family pet or a fox jumping on its prey.  As we launched this new website I felt very strongly about bringing unique artists that you might not otherwise see to the forefront with our website.  We are only featuring the very finest works from hand-picked artisans whose work we know well.

Diane has always been an artist accomplished in several other mediums;  sketching, pastel portraits, clay sculpting and when she discovered needle felting, she fell in love. Each piece is an individual work of art, never to be duplicated.  These are one-of-a-kind treasures.

In the beginning, three years ago, Diane started by creating works of art representing her own pets, as well as many other breeds and types of animals, and progressed to commission work for people who wanted 3D replicas of their own beloved pets, present or past that included their specific markings. Some have also had their pet’s fur incorporated into the statue.

The statues, which are typically 7 inches by 10 inches, may take anywhere from a week to two weeks to complete depending on the complexity of the piece being creating.  The hardest part is balancing all of the parts of the piece to ensure that they are the most life like that they can be. Diane starts with a wire skeleton that she crafts, that is wrapped in sheep wool called Tunis. She pokes in with a barbed needle to build up the structure of the animal, then the top layer is crested with Corriedale and Merino wools with the specific coloring and markings of the model used giving it a fur appearance. Glass eyes and polymer clay for such things as hooves and noses finish the details.

Diane says one of her highlights of these marvelous creatures is having Takaya the Lone Wolf to be included in the Takayas Legacy second annual art festival in British Columbia.  This wolf has been featured on a National Geographic episode and is famous for his amazing story. The stunning Takaya permanently resides in The Eagle Feather gallery in Victoria, BC.

I have the most wonderful replica from Diane of our beloved Percheron mare Tammy, who is no longer with us.  Her sculpture has a place of honor in our home, where I look at her often and I’m reminded of all of the good times we had with her as a family.
